MDF vs. Plywood Kitchen Cabinets: Which Is Better?

Choosing between MDF and plywood is an important decision when planning custom kitchen cabinets. Both materials can perform well, but they are suited to different parts of the cabinetry.

What Is MDF?

MDF is an engineered wood panel made from fine wood fibres compressed with resin. Its smooth and consistent surface makes it a popular choice for painted cabinet doors.

MDF is commonly used for:

• Painted shaker or flat-panel doors

• Drawer fronts

• Decorative panels

• Custom routed profiles

MDF usually costs less than high-quality plywood and provides a clean painted finish. However, it is heavier and can swell if unfinished edges are exposed to water.

What Is Plywood?

Plywood is manufactured from multiple thin layers of wood veneer arranged in alternating directions. Cabinet-grade plywood is strong, relatively lightweight, and generally holds screws well.

Plywood is commonly used for:

• Cabinet boxes

• Longer shelves

• Structural panels

• Components carrying heavier loads

Plywood often tolerates brief moisture exposure better than standard MDF, but it is not waterproof. Its quality can also vary, so the panel grade and core construction matter.

MDF vs. Plywood: Which Is Better?

Neither material is automatically better for every part of a kitchen.

Choose MDF when:

• You want a smooth painted finish

• The design includes routed or shaker-style doors

• Keeping material costs controlled is important

Choose plywood when:

• Structural strength is a priority

• Shelves will carry heavier items

• Stronger screw holding is required

• Lower panel weight is preferred

A combination of materials is often the most practical solution . MDF can be used for painted doors and decorative panels, while cabinet-grade plywood can be selected for boxes and structural components.

Regardless of the material, proper edge sealing, quality hardware, accurate fabrication, and professional installation are essential. Areas near sinks, dishwashers, and plumbing connections also require careful water protection.
